Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendment of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities operated by recipients of Federal financial assistance.

The College of Charleston is committed to promote and protect a learning and living environment where civil discourse, respect for the individual and appreciation for the diversity of human experiences are valued as compelling academic interest.  The College is committed to providing an environment free from discrimination on the basis of sex and provides many resources to students, faculty and staff to address concerns relating to discrimination on the basis of sex, which include sexual misconduct and sexual violence.

Title IX Coordinator responsibilities

Kimberly Gertner, Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs has been designated the administrator to carry out investigations and compliance-related responsibilities for Title IX.  Additionally, Jeri Cabot, the Dean of Students, serves as the College's Deputy Title IX coordinator.  Their responsibility includes:

  • Training students and employees about how to identify and report sexual harssment violence
  • Ensuring prompt response to each complaint; and
  • Conducting investigations, where appropriate

Coordinators will provide information on all options for complaint resolution.  They will work closely with the Office of Victim Services, the Sexual Misconduct Committee, Department of Public Safety as well as other offices on campus to educate the campus community about Title IX.
